In case you missed it, the Ceremonial Unboxing Of The Goodies video can be seen in the previous post. (Yes, I realize this post is somewhat delayed but HEY I wanted to make sure I used all the products more than once to give you an accurate review. I DID IT FOR YOU.)
Skinny & Co sent me a nice box of samples of different coconut oil products.
I do like coconut oil and often cook with it.
This company makes beauty products from coconut oil too, so I was anxious to give it a try.
FAVORITE: The Sugar Scrub.
(This one was not a consumable but since the ingredients only listed the coconut oil, sugar, and vanilla bean, I tasted it. YES I DID. And it was good.)
ANYway. I used this scrub on my footsies and it did make them so soft and smooth. No residual stickiness. I would recommend it!
Now, a year or so ago my Facebook timeline was filled with people touting the Joys of Oil Pulling.
Google that if you don't know what it is...but basically you put a lump of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around like Listerine, only for like 10 or 20 minutes.
YES THAT IS A VERY VERY VERY LONG TIME.
But I have friends who swear by it, claiming it is good for their gums and enamel and makes their teeth even cleaner when they brush.
I have no idea if those claims are actually true, but the Skinny & Co Oil Pulling is infused with some peppermint and did not gross me out. In fact after using it and then brushing, my mouth did feel clean and BONUS, my lips were nice and soft and smooth.
Downside: This product is pretty spendy.
The moisturizer/makeup remover was pretty okay -- it took considerable rubbing to get my lashes clean but on the other hand, my skin felt soft afterward without a leftover greasy feeling. That was one of my main worries going in. Plus it's infused with chamomile and some other oils and it smells really nice.
And last but not least, the moisturizer/metabolism booster that actually IS supposed to be consumed. Now as an external moisturizer, I had high hopes since my hands and arms get so dry...but (maybe it's just me) it didn't really absorb to my satisfaction.
The website says you can add this to a smoothie (which I don't ever make) or oatmeal (which I rarely eat) or even off the spoon (which...YUCK NO). So a friend said "Try it in your coffee!" and I'm all "Okay!" and I did. It wasn't bad, and my coffee had a light coconut scent which was not at all unpleasant.
***LET ME JUST DISCLAIMER FOR A SECOND HERE: I do NOT like fresh coconut meat very much. I do NOT like candy like Mounds or whatever that is all made of coconut. I DO like the teeny bit of toasted coconut on top of girl scout Samoas cookies)
So the coconut oil in my coffee wasn't terrible, just had to give it a stir before each sip. I did not notice my metabolism boosted, though. I also rubbed it on a whole chicken in lieu of my normal olive oil before oven roasting, and it was tasty and make a delicious crispy skin which of course I pulled off and stuffed in my mouth like a hyena before it was even cool.
Overall, if you're a fan of coconut oil in general for cooking or beauty or both, I would recommend these products.
For me, they're a little too far on the pricey side - if you're on a tighter budget, you'd be better off just getting that big jar of coconut oil at the Big Box Store for $8.99 - although it won't smell or taste nearly as nice.
**stuff I have to let you know: YES, these samples were given to me for free by Skinny & Co in hopes that I would review them, which I have. NO, I was not told what kind of review to post or threatened with waterboarding if I had anything bad to say, my opinions are aaaalllll my own because I DO WHAT I WANT.

Gonna wash that [gray] right out of my hair...
**Stuff I have to say: I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. MY REVIEWS ARE MY OWN.
I'm not one to get too fussed about hair and coloring and cutting - except that time this girl was so completely NOT PAYING ATTENTION to anything except how angry she was at the previous customer (side note: NEVER ALLOW AN ANGRY HAIRDRESSER TO CUT YOUR HAIR NEVER EVER EVER) that I ended up with haircut that caused my dad to introduce me as his son Randy.
Although in fairness it did look pretty cute once it had grown out about an inch or so.
My natural hair color is blondish -- the shades have varied over the years depending on how much time I've spent outside in the sun. I did use lemon juice to streak it when I was young, I admit.
I colored my hair red once, but the shade blended so well with my regular color that it didn't look a whole lot different. Except of course when my hair was wet, then it was Ronald McDonald hair.
When I hit 40 though, practically overnight my hair went dark blond with lots of red and mousy brown...yes, just in time for the gray sprinkled throughout to really show up.
Since then it has gotten steadily darker over the years, so when Influenster offered me an opportunity to color my hair, I thought why not?
They offered me about 4 selections - to be honest, I *almost* chose the black because I have always wondered how I'd look with black hair and eyebrows, especially since I've got the coloring of my Irish and German forbears.
SO TEMPTING!
But in the end I chickened out and picked another color, medium brown Age Defy from Clairol.
So easy to use, I didn't need help even though this was only my second time coloring my hair in 46 years.
Okay, let me be completely truthy - I sort of made a little mess around my ears and the back of my neck - HOWEVER, I was half-blind because I had my glasses off.
Here's the BEFORE - my natural, untouched color blend of blonde, gold, brown, red, andgray sparkly silver:
In addition to getting darker, it's gotten curlier, frizzier, and coarser. The Clairol Age Defy color is supposed to help with the frizzy and the coarse, because it's got Pantene in it (and I do like Pantene, it makes my hair feel so nice!).
And now.... TA DAAAAH!!
The new me. Look, no gray!
It's so soft and so much smoother! There aren't a zillion little frizzies on the top of my head!
WOW, it is dark, I've never had dark hair like this before. It looks kind of weird because my eyebrows are mostly blonde and pretty sparse - my friend Amanda said I have Matt Smith eyebrows (Whovians will know what that means).
She is correct.
So I guess I should learn how to use an eyebrow pencil because I have no idea whatsoever.
What do you think?
Which do you prefer?
The light side or The Dark Side?
Au naturel?
Or THIS, softer, smoother, with no gray?

And the winner is...
...Kerry Housley of OKC! CONGRATS! (also very exciting because OKC is hosting a Spartan Race this year - so that worked out well, woohoo!)
BUT FIRST...
a stipulation or two.
If you find you are going to be unable to use the code, PLEASE either
1. Give the code to someone who will be able to use it OR
2. Let me know so I can re-draw for another winner.
Them's the rules, chillun, and you dasn't break them or you will SUFFER MY WRATH.
I say that with love and affection.
I would like to thank everyone who entered the drawing - it was done with a random name picker, and if a re-draw is necessary I will use that site again.
But wait - all is not lost for thebig losers people who didn't win this time! This is the second time that Reebok/Spartan Race has asked me to promote them, so I am hopeful that in the future I will be able to get more free race codes to give to you!
AND.
For everyone else who entered (or even if you didn't enter the drawing but are still planning to race at some time this year) - you can get a 10% discount off one race when you use the code SPARTANBLOGGER while registering. The more of you who use the code, the better my chances are at getting to give away more free races. Just saying.
Thanks for your participation, thank you Reebok/Spartan Racing!
(PS - did you know that you can also look for a Spartan trainer/coach?)
I've done what I can for you - you're on your own now in keeping your resolutions.
Go away now.

This is...SPARTAN! Pt. II: Resolutions
So Christmas is just past and you're still excited about setting up that new FitBit until you lose it or by the time two weeks have passed you've forgotten to wear it more often than not and you haul out your New Year's Resolutions, or as I like to call it: Setting Yourself Up For Epic Failure And Embarrassment And Oh Yeah That Gym Membership You'll Be Paying Out The Ass For The Next 20 Years And Only Use It Twice.
But don't let that discourage you.
Really.
I mean it.
Have a cookie and a Netflix binge.
I do know that there are a select group of you who will actually follow through with your
1. Get in shape/exercise/lose weight!
resolution. At least for longer than...January. So YOU PEOPLE, this is for you.
Last year I wrote a post for Spartan Races/Reebok, and I guess I did a good enough job that they've asked me to write another this year to tell you about some new and different stuff they've got happening. I looked at the Spartan Race website and I tell you, it was nearly enough to make me want to enter a race myself. [nearly. that is an important qualifier]
It is ADVENTURE RACING at it's finest. I like the way they put it on the website: "Spartan Race is on a mission to get you active, healthy, excited about change, and return to our ancient roots where running through the woods, getting dirty, and facing adversity was part of everyday life. Our events are all about challenging today's perception of normal."
The coolest new thing in my opinion happens in March - you will TAKE A CRUISE to the race! From Port of Miami you'll be taken to Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas for a Spartan Sprint - which is a brand new thing.
A CRUISE. Travel in style before you go pound the crap out of yourself on the course! TOTALLY worth it and I'm not even being sarcastic.
As I mentioned last year, my friend Sean and some of his family and friends are frequent Spartan Race participants:
They tell me that some of the races are brutally intense but they've never had more fun.
One of the nice parts about the Reebok Spartan Races is that they're accessible to most everyone. For beginners, sign up for a Spartan Sprint! Beginner/entry level doesn't mean it won't be challenging though, so suck it up, Buttercup, and prepare to get down and dirty.
There is an intermediate level, an advanced Beast level, and an extreme level Death Race.
I will pay you upwards of $5 to show me some pictures of you in the Death Race.
I'm totes good for the money. Also? I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU. So you cannot refuse.
Need some help with the workout? They've got Workout Of The Day motivation and Food of the Day recipes to keep you on track. Also this year be sure to listen to the Spartan UP! podcast - hosted by bestselling author Joe De Sena.
Need to know where to race? They're scattered across the country so most people will be able to find one close - here's an upcoming race schedule - in fact in just a couple of short weeks you could be racing in So. Cal! (Local Okie friends - there's going to be a Super Spartan race in OKC in 2015 - get registered!)
There are even age-appropriate courses for the littlest kids! If your kid is entered in the Spartan Kids race, you get 2 free spectator passes as well. I think this is one of the most awesome parts of the Spartan Race experience, especially since so many schools have lost their phys ed programs and some elementary schools have even done away with intramural sports. It makes me sad, since I loved playing basketball and softball all through school, since I was about 8 years old. (gratuitous personal photos to follow:)
Do yourself a favor and get a SEASON PASS - start off with a sprint and soon you'll be headed for the Death Race!
I AM TALKING TO YOU, my triathlon-running friends, Warrior Dashers, and workout fanatics. Don't make me call you out by name on social media (although I probably will anyway).
At least go check out the website - there's a bunch of stuff I didn't even mention here because some of you have the attention span of a gnat and I know you *coffcoffJenniferDuplantiscoffcoff* are already thinking "TL;DR".
Do you remember me mentioning a FREE RACE CODE? Just leave a comment of some sort here, or on Facebook or Twitter, letting me know you want to be entered for the drawing. Every RE-TWEET and/or SHARE of the link to this blog post will earn you additional entries! Got ello.co? Share the link to this post and get another entry!
Drawing will be JANUARY 10th so you can get into an early race if you want. Go forth and share!
***Added bonus: Get 10% off any race when you register with the code: SPARTANBLOGGER
P.S. Dear Reebok, I don't suppose that there's any chance you could hunt up a pair of those classic plain solid white leather sneakers with the embroidered round emblem on the side, the ones I can't find anymore? Women's size 9. I think they're NPC II classics. I'm just saying it would be a nice gift for some deserving someone. It might even inspire a person to train for a Spartan Race. #Maybe :)
These ones:
2. I DO WHAT I WANT
C. I could totally keep the free race code for myself if I wanted to. But hey, I'm all about the readers getting something good. I'm totes unselfish like that.)

This is....SPARTAN!
Spartan racing, I mean.
You guys know I'm pretty lazy - well, I *used* to be athletic (hum a few bars of Glory Days here) - but now I get most of my sports on the teevee because I am old and arthritic in addition to that lazy thing.
But I have friends (I know! Friends! It surprises the hell out of me every day too!) who actually like to "do stuff" and "participate" and blahblahblah, and I guess you guys are the ones I'm talking to now.
Reebok puts on these fun races called Spartan Races.
The length and number of obstacles vary - there are different levels from "hey, I just heaved my fat ass off the couch" (well, I'm paraphrasing a little there) up to "LOOK AT ME BITCHES, I'M KING OF THE WORLD!" (again, paraphrasing)
My friend Sean and some of his friends have actually participated in some Spartan races and he has signed up for several more -- so I have it on good authority that even though some levels of the race can be tough and exhausting, they're fun - especially with friends along.
Look! You get a medal too!
What's cool is that you can do this with family - because they offer Spartan Kids races as well! With so many schools dumping their Phys Ed and sometimes even Intramural sports programs, I can't think of a better way to teach your kids about fitness and instill a little healthy competitive streak too. They'll have fun, get dirty, and get fit all at the same time!
There are Spartan sprints, an entry level, something called a Trifecta (which looks awesome but totally hard), all the way up to a ‘99.9% need not apply’ extreme level Death Race.
NOW LISTEN UP - here's the best part: I have a code to give away FOR A FREE RACE! It's a one time code for any open heat (non-confirmed start time) in any 2014 Spartan Race in the continental US.
ALSO! I have a code that will give you 10% OFF any Spartan Race 2014! (this link has a schedule)
So now you have no excuse - a chance fora freebie and a discount!
**LEAVE A COMMENT HERE to ENTER FOR THE FREE RACE CODE.
All you rock climbers, Warrior Dashers, Marathon runners, obstacle course lovers...Let me hear from you!
TEST YOURSELVES. PUSH YOUR LIMITS.
*****UPDATED: Sorry, I gave away the free race code, but anyone who plans to SPARTAN UP can use this code for a 10% discount off: SPARTANBLOGGER

B. For about 20 years I wore nothing but Reebok classic white leather sneakers - you know, they were plain white with just a logo thingy on the side? And every year the logo & lining were a different color. I can't find those anymore, which is sad, but maybe Reebok will take pity on me now and MAKE THOSE AVAILABLE AGAIN? PLEASE?
C. Sometimes you just do something because you want to. Plus also I could totally keep the free race code for myself if I wanted to. But hey, I'm all about the readers getting something good. I'm totes unselfish like that.)

ALSO! I have a code that will give you 10% OFF any Spartan Race 2014! (this link has a schedule)
So now you have no excuse - a chance for
All you rock climbers, Warrior Dashers, Marathon runners, obstacle course lovers...Let me hear from you!
TEST YOURSELVES. PUSH YOUR LIMITS.
*****UPDATED: Sorry, I gave away the free race code, but anyone who plans to SPARTAN UP can use this code for a 10% discount off: SPARTANBLOGGER
(Disclaimer: I am receiving NOTHING for posting this advertisement. They asked and I posted because
1. Fitness + Fun = Good times

You will be ASTOUNDED at what you read in this post! #UpworthyStyleTitles
Okay, I'm not much of a giver. Usually it's because I don't have anything to give...but to be honest, even if I DID have stuff to give, I probably wouldn't because I'm thoughtless like that.
I mean if you need something or want something that I've got, I will most likely say "of course! Just take it." If you ask for something and I have it, I will give it to you. But too often it doesn't occur to me to just GIVE something.
On the other hand, I try not to be too much of a taker. What I mean is - if you give me something, I will be surprised and deeply appreciative, but I don't expect things (unless of course it's my birthday and then I certainly expect you to sing me a birthday song or possibly do a little dance).
I don't like to ask for stuff (especially help, as my family and closest friends can probably tell you).
The point is - I end up getting a lot more than I give back.
Since I know what a struggle it is every month around my own household, just getting by while running my own tiny business (PS GO LIKE THIS PAGE! Click the links and SHOP SHOP SHOP! SHARE the posts!), I thought that maybe I could give a little by offering a little free word-of-mouth advertising for my friends who also have little business or ventures.
These are people with whom I've actually done business, or used/purchased their products, or read their books, or know personally in "real life".
So I'm vouching for them, their products, and their excellent service. You should bookmark these and go back often (and this too!) Give them a little support, if you can.
Trust me. No, really.
Like fun vintage clothing, shoes, and costume jewelry? Visit my friend Jaclyn's Etsy store.
Make your house smell fantastic with Scentsy warmers and delicious scents - talk to my pal Deejay!
I know some of you are foodies and loooove to cook, so if it's fun and hella (do people still say hella?) useful gadgetry you want, holla at my friend Melody for Pampered Chef goodies!
Looking for some awesome books to read? One of my favorite couples in the world both write - completely different styles and subjects, but both are brilliant at what they do: read Beyond The Bridge by SK Waller for a rockin' rock & roll story, and So Faithful A Heart (the love story of Nancy Storace & Wolfgang Mozart) by Lynette Erwin for some actual, interesting romantic history.
If you're redecorating and need some wonderful artwork, may I (strongly) suggest you visit Neil Kramer and Megan Gordon? Because their photographs are completely different in style and completely stunning. Your walls will thank you, I promise. I have artwork from both of them and get lots of compliments.
Speaking of photographs, if you're in the Virginia area and need some absolutely gorgeous family photos, I highly recommend my very talented friend Kimberly. Go look at her portfolio too - she's amazing.
My friend Ed has written 5 (FIVE!!) books about New Orleans history - if you want to get to know NOLA, then Ed's your guy. He makes the history lively and interesting! Go get a book! (I'm particularly fond of the one about jazz)
Looking for something lovely to read to your child at bedtime? My friend Corey Feldman (NOT the 80s actor)(although it would be cool if that guy was my friend too) has just the thing - a series of books about Egret The Elephant.
Some of my most treasured books were written (and AUTOGRAPHED JUST FOR ME ONLY!) by my long-time blog friend Karen. The books written by her cats are even funnier than her own books. You should read them all.
The lovely Heather and Angie keep my skin smooth and smelling good with their delicious homemade sugar scrubs - and if you fancy fancyin' up your garden, they have some excellent garden pallet signs!
I do love me some Mary Kay products (they have some dermabrasion stuff for your face that makes it like SILK!) - and my friend Karmen can fix you right up with everything you'll ever need to keep looking young and fabulous.
If you're an old-time blogger like me, you've most likely heard of Golfwidow's Ministry of Silly Walks blog. Clever and funny, Golfwidow aka my friend Sondra has a funny, fabulous book you should buy!
If you want to get some permanent makeup - lips, eyebrows, eyeliner - then you should talk to my friend Crystal. I haven't had it done myself (because BOC BOC!), but she's trained and licensed and I've known her since about 5th grade. I would trust her to do it if I wasn't a needle-coward. She'll also make your skin awesome with a chemical peel or microderm abrasion.
I'm quite certain that I've accidentally left some people off this list and for that I'm sorry - I can only chalk it up to being old and forgetful. I have trouble remembering nouns. I say things like "go get me the thing by the dealie." So please don't take it personally, and send me a message and I'll advertise your business too. xoxo
(passive/aggressive PS: or maybe you don't ever engage with me or give me a "like" every now & again so that's why I forgot about you. Is all I'm saying)
(aggressive/aggressive PPS: or maybe I just don't really like you)

Two things.
1. HALP. My blog is broken! The comment service I used to use is defunct. It has ceased to be. It is dead (I'm not dead yet! - OH YES YOU ARE). Can someone please help me find/install a new blog service or at the very least put blogger.com comments back on this custom template? Because I am DUM.
(P.S. EMAIL ME since clearly you can't leave a comment. Doy.)
2. I have always said I'd NEVER (no never!) have advertisements on my blog but seriously I don't think it counts if I'm advertising my family business. Right? RIGHT?
So please, please, please, go to one of these sites and SPEND SPEND SPEND!
For reals we've got some awesome DESIGNER CLOTHES (lots of them are NEW! WITH! TAGS!) for low low (super)low prices.
Check 'em out.
Then bookmark them for later, because new stuff is added every week!!
Also? You'll be putting food on the table for my kids and who wouldn't feel good about that??
So GO FORTH and SHOP.
